I started Word Spy 20 years ago, way back in January 1996. It began life as The Daily Word, an ad hoc email list that was originally meant only for family and friends. Through forwarding and similar word of mouse (a term I added on September 20, 1997), the service grew steadily in popularity. I soon added the words to my website (which I hosted over an ISDN line connected to my house; heady days!), set it up as an official mailing list, registered the wordspy.com domain in 1999, and, well, here I still am.
Many thanks to everyone who has supported Word Spy over the years — particularly those long-suffering friends and family members who’ve been subjected to my posts from Day One.
